CAYLA ZEEK

Cayla Mattea Zeek is an artist originally from Lafayette, LA and graduated at University of Louisiana with a degree in painting. Her artwork is characterized by a mixed media layering process with watercolor, pen, charcoal, acrylic and oil on canvas. She gathers inspirations from her many travels as well as her experiences growing up in Louisiana. Her work encompasses themes of mythology, alchemy, Louisiana flora + fauna, and the body. She has shown her artwork through many exhibitions in galleries of Lafayette, Louisiana such as the Acadiana Center of the Arts, The George Rodrigue Foundation, and The Hilliard Art Museum, as well as in Breaux Bridge, and New Orleans.

In 2015, she started a hand-illustrated stationery business titled after her middle name: Mattea. Zeek became the youngest visual artist chosen to create an original artwork for Festival International in the summer of 2017. That same year she left teaching middle school art to pursue being a full-time artist which led her to become the 2019 Washington DC Mardi Gras Artist, a film-maker, and full-time entrepreneur, all while maintaining a rigorous painting and design schedule. In her spare moments, she enjoys playing music, acting in plays, exploring Louisiana culture, learning French and most of all expressing herself through painting.
